SFSS (Students for Safe Schools) Manual (pdf format) >>

Many schools and communities are recognizing that to develop schools of "character" they must have safe schools and communities. Federal Safe and Drug Free School legislation , Title IV, Part A authorizes funding for states to fund violence and drug prevention programs. Within the Safe and Drug Free program is the requirement that "LEAs (schools) that receive SDFSC funds to have a plan for keeping schools safe and drug-free that includes appropriate and effective discipline policies, security procedures, prevention activities, a student code of conduct, and a crisis management plan for responding to violent or traumatic incidents on school grounds." This SFSS manual can help schools respond to this requirement, with the help of their own students, who really know the issues of violence and drug use. The manual will help to ascertain what the needs of the community really are, before any programming begins. The manual clearly shows how this work can be integrated with academic courses and curriculums, so students are clearly learning as they improve their own communities. This work can clearly contribute to the character development of students.
